Here Are 3 Things To Feed Chickens So Their Eggs Taste Amazing!

  • Here are three of the best foods to ensure high-quality, delicious eggs from your chickens. These are pretty basic foods, so it's really easy to incorporate them into their diet.

Step 1: A high protein diet
The foundation of that diet is the wheat grass fodder I grow. Wheat grass is very high in protein, and protein is key to healthy chickens and better tasting eggs.

I also add alfalfa and grass hay, especially in winter. Who doesn’t love reminders of summer when you’re trapped inside? The alfalfa and hay add protein and they get to scratch through it to get to other tasty bits of their dinner.

    Step 2: Fiber and Herbs

Along with the wheat grass, I add oatmeal, alfalfa, kelp, garlic (fresh or powdered), and dried oregano to my chicken’s feed. The oatmeal provides fiber in an easy to break down form.

Recent studies have shown that garlic and oregano have antibiotic properties, and help keep hens healthy and disease-free.

In fact, some large egg operations have been able to eliminate antibiotics completely from their hens’ diets after adding oregano and garlic to their feed. They claim their hens have never been healthier.

    Step 3: Fresh foods
I don’t use a set recipe. I just sprinkle and mix. I also add kitchen scraps, as well as fresh veggies like cabbage, tomatoes (which they can pick through), etc.

Since it’s winter and their water keeps freezing, the fresh veggies help them stay hydrated in addition to giving me better tasting eggs.

In warmer weather, I add weeds I pull from the garden, grass clippings, fallen fruit, etc to their diet.

You’re on a homesteading post. People here kill animals and eat them. People here spend an awful amount of energy on their everyday work of keeping their homestead going. We’re not eating soy yogurt & painting our nails with formaldehyde free nail polish!

Diana Carulli-DeVaul who’s being the$#%&!@*here, Diane? I’m glad you scoped my page, too bad you have an obvious learning disability and a stubborness that in time will probably kill you and most of the people you know. May even end up being your fault, so , idk, good luck with your pride and lack of empathy? Your choices aren’t personal when they effect literally everyone.

I happily grow fruits and veggies too. They go great with my pork chops, fried chicken and juicy fat steak. Kinda having a hard time understanding your comment about our choices effect everyone. Eat what you want but if it’s about killing life then maybe you should do some research. Pretty sure those plants your eating have an extreme social network of energy. They feel it when they’re killed too you know.

Tina Bell that’s silly thinking, there Tina. I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve had this ridiculous conversation with idiots trying to justify their killing of animals who scream, feel, and bleed. Plants don’t have a central nervous system, therefore they cannot feel pain. Plants thrive when they’re cut. They also leave us seeds to grow more. Our bodies also thrive when we eat plants. Meat and dairy makes us sick in many ways. The right diet is obvious. Plants are here to nourish us, and animals are here for their own reasons. Farming animals uses tremendous amounts of water and feed, which causes droughts and could be feeding more people. Their waste pollutes water ways and land on factory farms, their production massively contributes to global warming. Eating others’ fats and hormones cause a slew of health problems, especially heart disease and cancers which are Americas top killers. Your choices effect EVERYONE.

Question: if I feed them bacon, would I get eggs & bacon?
