Malware Vs. The U.S. Power Grid: Why Everyone Should Be Prepared

  • Late last year, Ukraine's power grid system was attacked and taken down by hackers. While Americans were not impacted by the problem, we cannot turn a blind eye to the incident. Experts are now discovering that Ukraine's cybersecurity breach could be a precursor to one in the U.S. As a result, it's important to start prepping for such an event.

Experts who examined the cyber weapon describe it as a malicious toolkit that easily can be turned against the U.S. power grid with a “little tweaking,” Vice reported.

“There’s a ton of functionality in this that was never used in Ukraine,” Robert M. Lee of infrastructure security company Dragos said of the weapon.

Lee believes that Industroyer/CrashOverride can cause blackouts in the United States with only slight changes.

Experts like Lee are concerned because the only purpose of Industroyer/CrashOverride is to sabotage or destroy power systems and industrial equipment.

“There is no function in this malware that you could use for espionage,” Lee told Motherboard. “So there is zero reason to position this anywhere where you weren’t going to attack.”

The analysts believe the malware was being tested on Ukraine’s grid.

Do you believe the U.S. electrical grid is vulnerable to a cybersecurity attack?

If I can I’ll install a huge underground Gastank filled with gas and have several generators with spare parts for future discretionary usage..and woodstacked up to the sky.
