A Small Town Was Shut Down. Could This be a Sign of The Times

  • Many of us probably can’t believe that a city can be shut down. However, this incident shows us how easily our hometown can be disintegrated if we don’t take measures to prepare for a lack of funding or even a natural disaster.

A city government in Iowa has vanished completely because of unpaid sewer bills.

Street lights were turned off permanently, garbage service ended and all city employees laid off in Mount Union, the Associated Press reported.

The cause of Mount Union’s demise was unpaid sewer bills. A decade ago, the city put in a $1.2 million sewer system.

The system was supposed to be paid for by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant and a loan. The loan was supposed to be paid by sewer bills, but a number of residents in town did not pay their sewer bills.

Initially, that led to rates jumping from $35 a month to $150 a month. Citizens voted last year, by a margin of 32-31, to dissolve the town.

Do you think this could ever happen in your town? Do you have any ideas for prepping for such an event?

Not exactly this sort of situation but the town I was raised in (and still live in) was legislated out of existence when a county reformation took place. there used to be a local level government but not anymore. services remain (mostly) and the only real difference is that we have to travel farther to do things like pay property taxes etc then we used to. AND decisions that impact us locally are no longer made locally but by a county-wide consensus of politicians “for the good of everyone”. considering we make up less than 1/8 of the county population now, you can guess who’s “good” most things are decided in favour of…..

Some people seem to believe that when you live in a city you should just do what the city government tells you. Let the city die.
