Forging a Rebar Knife With No Power Tools At All

  • Knowing how to make your own weapons and tools is a skill set that will never go unused and knowing how to make them without the use of power tools is an added bonus.

There are some things that you will need in order to accomplish this task and most of them are not things that most people have laying around the house. Unless of course you are a blacksmith or know someone who is a blacksmith

You can order these things online or simply go to your nearest hardware store and see what they have available. If blacksmithing is something that you're interested in (and it should be) then these items are things that are a great investment and good to have laying around just in case.

So let's see what you will need and what it takes to make this rebar knife.

    What you will need:

    5 inch steel rebar

    Forge

    Tongs

    Anvil

    Sledgehammer

    polished face hammer

    Hacksaw

    Sandpaper

    Metal File

    Directions:

Ignite forge and let fire burn for a minute

Use tongs to hold rebar in fire until it is a dull yellowish color

Take it out of the fire, using the tongs hold the rebar on the anvil and straighten the rebar out with the sledgehammer.

Once that is done start flattening out the part that will become the blade.

For the rest of the instructions what I would suggest is watching the short video below to see exactly how it is made. The video is only about 6 minutes long so it won't take up much of your time and once you watch it the process is so simple you won't ever forget the instructions.

Use tool steel. Rebar is what they make out of whatever is left at the end of a run. I’ve seen mild steel, machining steel with lead in it, and even armor plate.

Don’t roll the dice. Use something real. Car springs are good, and I’ve had success with lawnmower blades. Or pay $10 for O1 tool steel and make something that will last longer than you do.

I thought you would like it.. You already planned on teaching me how to forge with you when we are together finally.

Your definitely gonna learn. Teach you to make a knife from nothing but a single piece of steel.
