DIY Buckskin Knife Sheath

  • You only need a few hours to make this knife sheath, which you can make for under $15. This is a great project for leather crafters of all ages and skill levels, no matter what kind of budget you're working with.

    Materials to Gather

    12×12-inch piece of supple buckskin
    6×8-inch piece of heavy rawhide
    20 yards artificial sinew
    Glass beads, various sizes
    Plastic beads, 3mm

    Directions to Follow

Step 1: Fold the rawhide in half and trim to the shape of your blade (A). Cut a 5×12-inch sheet from the buckskin (B) and lay it under the rawhide. Cut along the curve of the rawhide.

Step 2: Slip 1⁄2 inch of the buckskin inside the fold of the rawhide. Use a sewing awl to punch three pairs of holes along the edge. With a carpet needle and sinew, stitch the buckskin flap into place.

Now,  take the leftover 7×12-inch piece of buckskin and fold it around the rawhide. Make four stitches and run them through all five layers in the uppermost (open) corner, and then pull the buckskin tightly over the rawhide. After this, make two sets of stitches down and up. Now, grab the buckskin and pull it upward and sew around the mouth of the sheath, trimming off the buckskin after. Slice the buckskin to make fringe, and you're done! You can also add some trim, such as beads.
