5 Fishing Hacks Every Fisherman Should Know

  • 1.) Don't smell like the fish.

This hack is more for whoever you are coming home to but there is nothing worse than not being able to get the smell of fish off your hands. After a day of fishing, I kid you not it does not matter how much soap you use the smell of fish will still linger! So what do you do?

Simple, Wet your hands and run it over stainless steel. This will miraculously remove a lot of those odors from your skin. Try it, it works. The remaining odor can just be removed easily with soap right after.

2.) Prevent the rod ends from sticking together.

The ends of the rods are called “ferrules” and they always end up getting stuck together. Prevent this from happening by applying a thin coat of beeswax to the main ferrule and the two-rod ends will easily slide apart. You will find that the melted wax from a beeswax candle is the perfect tool to use.

3.) Stop new line from tangling.

Everyone knows it can take a minute or two for brand new line on your reel to stop falling off every chance it gets. But did you know all it takes is this one hack to get it to form nicely to your reel.  All you have to do is run it under hot tap water for a couple of

All you have to do is run it under hot tap water for a couple of minutes. The heat will cause the line to form a memory of the reel and this will prevent tangles and twists later on and save you the trouble of untangling it every now and then.

    4.) Easily cut braided line.

A lot of line clippers and scissors have been dulled or ruined by trying to cut through braided fishing line. It’s not that easy to cut through it, let me tell you. There is a cheap and easy tool that you can use for this. It’s the little magnet milk bag that you can get at the grocery store. The blade in the plastic housing helps to quickly and easily slices through the line. If you can’t find these, plastic mail openers work just as fine.

5.) Hanging on to fish guts

Anyone who has accidently thrown the fish guts into the garbage can and let them there until the garbage truck comes along knows how bad of an idea this is. There are a couple of solutions that we can think of  and the most useful of course is to use the fish guts as fertilizer for your garden beds. This not only gets rid of them naturally but saved you from wasting them.

If you don't have a garden bed and do not plan on having one anytime soon then double bagging them into old plastic grocery bags and putting them in the freezer will keep them from stinking up the house until garbage day.  Just be sure to note on the bag that it contains fish guts so no one tries to mess with it!
