What’s Going on With The Earthquake Swarm in Yellowstone

  • Luckily for most of us, we don't need to worry about earthquakes since we don't live near fault lines. But, many are now bothered by the possibility that a larger earthquake event at Yellowstone could have widespread effects around the country. Read more to see whether you should truly be concerned:

That earthquake swarm that’s rocking Yellowstone National Park has reached at least 1,284 individual tremors.

Despite the fact that the earthquake swarm is refusing to die down, there’s absolutely no reason to be concerned. Yellowstone’s caldera will not collapse and erupt.

It’s more likely that they are taking place because several minor fault lines streaking across the National Park are experiencing some friction, stress build up and release. There’s a good chance, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), that groundwater of heated mineral-rich fluids are being squeezed through these faults, which is causing them to fracture ever so slightly.

Mostly, this phenomenon produces earthquakes that are so weak that they are registering as having negative magnitudes.

Even if ultimately there is an eruption, it will be a lava flow, not a supervolcanic planet-changing blast. The likelihood of any eruption at all taking place at Yellowstone right now is about 1 in 730,000, and it is more likely to be harmless than devastating. Although a supervolcanic blast is a possibility, it’s extremely unlikely that it will happen.

Have you been following the increase in earthquakes at Yellowstone?

This Volcano is due to go off. The best thing that could happen to this planet. Every 600,000 years it goes off, time for it to let go.

Nuti’n. Got a friend that studies these there and says it’s normal. Most of the time they see over 2k a year, sometimes alot during a short period. No change in the magma rise, just lots of seismic activity.

well they just opened it up to exploratory mining…soooo THAT should probably help. It’s super smart to drill on a super volcano
