Transform An Old Brake Drum Into a Forge

  • There are so many parts out there that once they have fulfilled their intended use they get cast aside and forgotten.

The one thing that I love about the DIY culture is rather than purchasing something brand new we are able to take from the old and with a little bit of time and attention, we are able to breathe new life into any item.

This next project is for those out there who love blacksmithing.

I love watching people work with metals because to me it is one of the oldest professions around. To watch something go from one form – into the fire and then be molded into something new and useful is relaxing for me.

I have a few friends who are into this art form and while they love it they say that it can get expensive at times as the cost of supplies can really add up. So that got me thinking. What if we took something that had already been used, give it a little bit of time and attention and in the end used it for another purpose.  Simple enough right.

So what we have done here is find a way to turn an old brake drum into a working forge. This DIY forge will also make for a great story. It’s a unique trick that not a lot of people have either thought of or tried. All it takes is a trip to the junkyard for a brake drum (if you don’t have one lying around). You’ll then only need a few additional materials that are most likely already within your tool shed. The rest can be completed without ever having to leave your backyard!
