As people become more interested in homesteading, sustainability and even prepping and survival tactics, a growing number of people are looking back in time and returning to ancient methods of doing everything from making tools to building homes. That's certainly the case with this very unusual home built by Mike Oehler of Idaho. What's so different about Oehler's home? It's completely underground! Plus, he built it himself and it's powered by the sun. Now, that's what we call genius!
Oehler built the home back in the late 1960s when he got interested in the back-to-the-land movement. He was living in San Francisco then, and his first foray into the woods didn't go so well. In fact, he nearly froze to death the first winter while living in a log cabin! That's when he got the idea to use the earth as insulation, building an underground home for himself and then others around Northern Idaho. Now he wants to share his mission with others.
To learn more about the benefits of an underground home and how Oehler built his, please continue to Page (2) for the full story.
