How To Make Homemade Insect Repellent

  • Here is what you will need:

    • Thyme 4 drops
    • Lemongrass 8 drops
    • Lavender 4 drops
    • Peppermint 4 drops

If you are camping, it may be worth it to make up a big batch of this natural insect repellent.  It can be used in several different ways.

    1. Put 3 drops on a cotton ball and place it near your pillow at night.

    2.  Put 2 drops on a ribbon or paper strip and hang them around the balcony, tent, cabin, or window.

    3.  Use in combination with your regular lotion and rub onto skin before your trip.  Put 3 drops of essential oil blend with 3 teaspoons of coconut oil or other regular lotion.

    4.  Water based splash- 5 drops of the blend, 1 TBSP witch hazel, 5 TBSP water.  Shake them in container before applying to skin.

The ankles are a prime target for mosquitos and other insects.  Try to cover your ankles with socks as much as possible when camping or outdoors.  You can always put a little drop of lavender or citronella at the top of your socks to prevent insect bites.

If you happen to get stung by one of these annoying little insects Lavender Essential Oil is a great topical application for bites and stings.  Apply one drop of lavender oil at a time every 5 minutes until a total of 10 drops have been absorbed.  This should help alleviate the pressure or pain.
