How To Choose The Right Brick for Those “Brick Projects”

  • Red Clay Brick

This is the traditional red clay brick that you find at Home Depot and at masonry supply stores. Clay bricks are made from clay and fired in a kiln between 2000F – 3000F (high enough to fuse the minerals). You can use clay brick in the oven dome, but we would not recommend using them

These bricks are great for all sorts of walkways and benches or guards around trees and even if you make an outdoor oven they can be used in the dome portion, however, we would not recommend using them for the oven floor.

    The good and the bad:

The bad: First, when used for a firepit or oven thermal cycling will cause clay brick to spall, where little pieces of the brick flake off, and could cause individual clay bricks to crack.

Second, clay brick is not as good a conductor as fire brick

Still, you can find clay bricks for about $.50 at Home Depot, which make them the most cost-effective option just be warned that while you can use something doesn't mean you should.

Our view is that unless cost is a prohibiting factor, we would recommend firebrick for anything having to do with heat or any sort of outdoor oven project.
