How Pegboard Can Change The Look and Functionality of a Home

  • The most obvious place to install a pegboard is in the kitchen since it gives you the space to hang utensils, pots and pans. However, if you're trying to add a more modern look to any rooms in your home, this is one easy and inexpensive way to do it. It allows you to see all of your things and keeps your drawers and cabinets less cluttered.

When we looked closely at this photo of Martino Gamper and Francis Upritchard’s kitchen, we realized that many of the walls were clad entirely of painted pegboard for a rather whimsical polka dot effect that is also very practical.

Ordinary pegboard is made from particle board, which is easily worn and damaged. Try and find 1/4″ tempered hardboard which is available at many lumber yards in 4′ x 8′ sheets for around $20.

OR if the sizing is right you can also use metal pegboard, which has the added advantage of being able to use magnets with it. You can find hooks at most home stores

The pegboard needs to stand off the wall at least 5/8- 3/4 of an inch; you can use a spacer or frame a rectangle of 1/2″ or 3/4″ wood strips.

Once you have done all of that you can paint it any color or design you like. Just be careful not to close up the peg holes with paint or primer.

Peg board is am an amazing way to combine functionality and art to your home. Everything you display becomes part of the aesthetic you create.

Our PegBoard 101 shows the gist of how to install it.
