Invasive Toads a Becoming a Major Problem in the South

  • So why are people saying there is an invasion of Cane toads?

“We're not going to get rid of them, they're here to stay, they're everywhere, they're breeding like crazy we just have to figure out how to live with them,” said North Naples Veterinarian Dr. Randy Eisel.

“Within an hour I can catch 100, easily 100,” said Naples-based wildlife trapper Ray the Trapper.

It seems that pet owners have the most to worry about. While these toads are a nuisance to us they can be fatal for your pets. Eisel said if your dog licks a cane toad, it can cause seizures, heart issues, and eventually death. Symptoms start in minutes, and right now the critters are incredibly active.

And this isn't just a problem for those living out in the country.

They thrive in an urban area, eating garbage and dog food homeowners leave out.

“I'm talking downtown…you'll find them on the swales especially when you have a lot of standing water waiting to drain after a lot of rain,”
