8 Weird Ways Our Ancestors Kept The Bed Warm During The Winter

    5. Sleep with the dog. The shared body heat from a pet can help.
    6. Night clothes beyond pajamas.  Their night clothes were often heavyweight combinations of wool and thick, cotton flannel.
    7. Snuggling. Families often slept together in the same bed.
    8. Hot iron. Hot pieces of iron were sometimes heated on the top of a wood-burning stove or in a fireplace and then placed into a metal bucket. The bucket was then brought to the bedroom and placed on the floor or even under the bed. The radiant heat from the hot iron lasted for hours.

Our ancestors came up with some pretty unique and efficient ways to keep their bed warms. They did things like cut a hole in the first and second floor to allow the heat to rise. They also would take hot coals and rub them on their bed before going to sleep. They would place hot pieces of iron in a bucket and put it under their bed to stay warm. If you are faced with a survival situation with no heat, some of these things that our ancestors did just might help you make it through the long cold nights.
