How To Make Waterproof Matches in 5 Quick Steps

  • The materials required for this simple DIY project are probably already in your home. It’ll be one of the less demanding tasks that you’ll complete when prepping. If you’re ever caught in a downpour when in the wilderness, you’ll thank yourself for waterproofing your matches.

    Materials:

    • Wooden matches
    • Nail polish – any color, but avoid those with glitter
    • Covering for your surface

    Directions:

    1. Cover your work area with newspapers or scratch paper.

    2. Dip each match about half way into the nail polish bottle.

    3. Drip any excess polish against the inner side of the back to avoid drips.

    4. Lie the dipped matches flat on the protected surface and allow to dry.  I prefer to leave them alone for 24 hours.

    5. Store in an enclosed container.

Have you been able to waterproof your matches?

I double dip my strike anywhere matches in wax. Not so much for water proofing but it helps them burn longer and the wax drips on the tinder as well .
