Here’s How to Safely Identify Edible Plants

  • If you’re going on an afternoon hike or a brief overnight camping trip, you’ve packed some food to take with you. After all, you’re not planning on hunting and gathering your food when a grocery store can provide you with the food you’ll need. However, you always want a plan B when you’re in the wilderness. It doesn’t take a seasoned survivalist to know that your food could be compromised, stolen by animals or be eaten by you faster than expected.

As a result, you can do some research on plants in your area that are edible. Another option is an edibility test. You want to have as many food source options as possible when in the wilderness and since there are an abundance of plant species out there, learning how to perform an edibility test is a useful survival skill. You can do it ahead of time so that once you’re in the woods, you know exactly which plants can be ingested if you no longer have your food supply.

Let’s take a look at what types of plants to avoid as well as the steps it takes to perform an edibility test!
