5 Ways To Live Without Refrigeration

  • Eat seasonally. Grow and eat fresh produce that grows in the spring and summer.  Extend the growing season by building a greenhouse. Canning root vegetables and winter squash that have a long storage life is also a great option.

During the summer, keep food cold in a well or root cellar. You can put food in mason jars and seal tight to keep the water out if you opt for a well. Simply place items into fish baskets that are lowered down into the water. This is good for butter and cheese that will not spoil at 55 to 60 degrees.

Take advantage of the cold weather in the winter.  One Option is to freeze bottles of ice to bring inside to use in a cooler or if you're super handy yu can build an ice house.  Basically, all you have to do is freeze bins of ice to stack floor to ceiling in an insulated building.  There are those who have done this and the ice lasts most of the year.

Don’t buy meat.  This one is great for the hunters out there. Once the food has been hunted and prepared you can feast on it and have dinner fit for a king!  Another option is always jerky or again canning is also a great option. Canned meat is the way to go when meat is too tough from an older animal.  It makes the meat very tender!

Make your own condiments. There are many that can be stored at room temperatures like soy sauce and hot sauce. For those that normally require refrigeration such as vinaigrette salad dressing, you can make it yourself.

Have you implemented any of these strategies? If so do you have tips or tricks that we should know? Let us know in the comments below.

I lived on a sailboat in the keys for two years. Refrigeration was not part of my solar and wind power plan. 😉

A farmer can put wheat in grainy a few years later he takes it out and it still grows, wheat flour can last for a very long time as long as it’s stored in a dry place, same goes with any type of grain, rice, brown beans, oatmeal, Dry peas just stored in a dry airtight container, don’t matter about temperature

Keep small livestock. That way you can always have a fresh meat supply without needing to go to the store.

Actually, temprature matters, a lot. If grains gets over 70 degrees mold and insects become a major concern.
