Safely Escape a Car Submerging in Water

  • Shockingly, hundreds of people per year drown in their cars. As with most SHTF events, we have to fight our natural instincts to panic and call for help. Those first few seconds are crucial so it's time to learn the 5 key steps in order to escape your car and get to the water's surface safely.

The worst mistake you can make in a situation like this one is to stay put.

Dr. Giesbrecht, a leading expert on submerged vehicle escape, told ABC news that the most common instinct is to keep doors and windows shut. He calls this the “death trap.”

Most people still believe that if they let the vehicle fill with water, the pressure will equalise and it will be possible to open the car's doors. “By then you will probably have drowned,” Dr. Giesbrecht said.

There is only one way to be sure you can escape:

    • Brace for impact
    • Unbuckle seat belts
    • Roll down windows
    • Push children out – oldest first – through the windows first
    • Adults escape through the windows

Once the windows are open, you have about 60 seconds to get everyone out safely.

Did you know how to safely escape a drowning car?
